There will not be much of anything happening around here for a while.
No baking, no sewing, no cooking…. Pretty much nothing – why
Because this arrived on Thursday!!!

Oh my WORD!!!! My addiction just got a million times worse.
Take a look at this site….. And I was not even Googling cookies, I was looking for ideas for Baby OL’s first birthday. It’s a sign I tell you…….
I think I need to bow down to this woman, these are works of art. The work that goes into each of them must be extreme…
I don’t know whether to give it a shot or to step back in admiration. I love the fact that she paints onto the cookie icing. I don’t think I would have thought of doing that. If I do “attempt” doing this it is going to be a much more basic version….
Follow THIS LINK to go and see shop or her BLOG. Truly amazing.

to sugar cookie icing….
So I think Mr OL might be right (but please don’t tell him I said so). I think I may become just a tad obsessed about certain things (and then move on).
At the moment I am obsessed with icing sugar cookies. I am trying to restrain myself as I really don’t have the time to start a new hobby – but oh my word it looks cool, and yummy! I keep looking at pictures, reading up about it, looking for recipes and finding out what equipment is necessasry. But, I have been very good, no money has been spent…. yet.
Look at these pictures and tell me it does not inspire you….

WARNING – LONG POST!!!!
So if you have a baby that sleeps well how much would you say was pure luck and how much would you say was down to hard work?
I am not sure why, but I constantly find myself apologising for how well Baby OL sleeps and I often say (and am told) that I am just really lucky – which I know I am but how much was down to pure luck? I know you get babies that just don’t sleep well and their moms have tried everything. Thankfully Baby OL was not one of those. She has never been a screaming, crying baby. She might moan and niggle sometimes but I think I can count on 1 hand the times when she has actually cried. More lately now that she has figured we actually react to it.
The lucky part:
The hard work part – I read LOTS of books on routine, sleep and parenting. And then I threw them all out after the 2nd week, and then picked them up and read them again. The three that I used the most and kept returning to were Tracy Hogg: The Baby Whisperer – Solves all your Problems, Baby Sense and Gina Ford’s The New Contented Little Baby Book. In the end I chose bits out of each one that I liked and put that together and discarded the rest. I stuck pretty closely the Gina Ford routine. I feel that if you actually read the WHOLE book properly it clears up a lot of the misconceptions about her letting babies cry it out and letting them go hungry etc. She believes in neither and is adamant about feeding when hungry or at a certain time, whichever comes first. However the part on how to actually get your baby in its cot and to fall asleep I followed The Baby Whisperer.
Here is what I did:
(These are the things that I believe worked for me and I know they are not for everyone though, I know they don’t work with every child or baby. I only have experience with one – mine.)
So what do you think – lucky or hard work? Probably a combination of both! She is an absolute dream. I put her down at 7 and she usually wakes sometime between 6:30 and 7:30 the following morning. She is now nearly 11 months old and I have only had to go to her twice since I put her on solids, which was at 6 months. Even before that she slept really well, but was waking up a bit earlier. She slept 7 till 7 the first time at 9 weeks old and although there were a few time after that where she started waking at 4am she would go back to sleep after a feed. I would say that from about 4 months she has slept through, sick or not. The one thing I can say though is that she still has NO teeth, so I am not sure how that is going to affect the whole sleep thing!!! I guess it will be a wait and see.
About the reflux, she did/does suffer from reflux. I did not however put her on any medication. Her paediatrician recommended that I first cut out ALL caffeine and luckily that I found it worked for her. She still reflux but was not as uncomfortable. I could notice the immediate effect of caffeine in my diet. Even the tiniest little bit and she would be absolutely miserable for at least 2 days. It was just not worth it. Even white chocolate affected her. So NO coffee, tea, chocolate of any variety, soda’s or anything else that had cocoa or might possibly have caffeine in it. For some reason she did take well to caffeine free tea either??? I also had no citrus, onions/garlic or tinned tomatoes as I found she did not take well to those either.
For those of you who have “good” sleepers – what did you do? And to those whose babies won’t or don’t sleep through what would you say the reason is. Especially to those with more than one child, where one sleeps and the other doesn’t. Did you do anything different? I am just curious – how much is actually down to good luck? Only having the one child I have nothing to compare her to.

Banks amaze and astound me.
I was looking at increasing the loan amount on my bond so went in to the bank to enquire. They said to do that they need proof of income, like a pay slip???? Uhm, ok, that’s all very well and fine but I bank with them. Surely if anyone can see what my income is it is them! I have had the same bank account since I was 5, that means that for the past 33 years they have been able to see what my income is! Nope, that is not good enough, they need a recent pay slip! They can’t do anything without a pay slip!
Astounding!
But while I was there I figured I would find out about reducing my bank charges. I found out that I am on the standard rate, but then you also get a discounted rate…. So unless I had enquired I would not know or get it. Surely if they can offer a discounted rate when you enquire, they should just offer that as a practice. Apparently not!
Oh well, at least I got one more thing done on my 2011 to do list!

Wow, there are some creative people out there.
Baby OL went to her first Birtday party and the mommy went all out. Take a look at the party packs she and her sister made, as well as the little owls they sewed for party favours! The bar really has been set high – and I have no hope (or intention) or attaining it.
I have an excuse – my sister does not sew….
At this party Baby OL had her first taste of “junk” food. I caved and gave her a Fling. It was that or keep her from wrestling them out of the mouths of all the other babies around her. She was not so sure at first but figured it out pretty quickly.
I think I got the glare that said “and where have these been my whole life….?”
I have been pretty good with what she eats so far, with most of it being home made or organic (Ollie). I think it is going to be harder as she gets older.

This year I decided to give both my Mom and my Mom-in-law each a hand-made Christmas present. It was Baby OL’s first Christmas so I wanted to give them something with her on it.
A little while ago a saw something on Ashley from Under the Sycamore’s blog (LOVE, LOVE, LOVE her blog) that I thought was fantastic, and wanted to give it a try. I came out better than I could have expected. I changed it a bit from that light as I put the pictures on the inside and I am so happy with it.
It is light, with photos on it. When you turn the light on you can see the photos through the material.
So here it is – step by step.
Firstly – buy a lamp (or two). The shades should be white or cream and the sides should be equal in diameter at the top or the bottom. It can be cone shaped by you are then going to have to play around with cutting the paper to get the angles right. I’m all for simplicity.
I then printed blank and white (for the one shade) and sepia (for the other) on to vellum which I bought at a paper shop. I just used the big printer at work and it printed them fantastically. I believe with ink cartridges you need to be careful it does not smudge so only do one page at a time.
Then cut the pictures to fit, and stick on the inside of the shades. I used my hot glue gun to stick it down. A few blisters on my fingers later I realised it would be a LOT easier to take the shade off the stand. Yip, a bit slow on that one. Anyway….
That was it. So easy!!! At night, when turned on they really look fantastic – and both Grannies were over joyed.
