Taking the easy way out

Today I am taking the easy way out.  I saw this on Jeanette’s blog and thought it a good idea.

Here is a list of 50 things you should be able to do.  It is not comprehensive but – just for fun.

I have highlighted the ones that I can do in bold.

1. Build a Fire
2. Operate a Computer
3. Use Google Effectively
4. Perform CPR and the Heimlich maneuver
5. Drive a Manual Transmission Vehicle
6. Do Basic Cooking
7. Tell a Story that Captivates People’s Attention
8. Win or Avoid a Fistfight – I would like to think I could avoid one, seeing as I have never actually been in one.
9. Deliver Bad News.  This I suck at.
10. Change a Tyre
11. Handle a Job Interview (Iooks like I might be needing these skills sooner rather than later – SUCKS!!!!!)

12. Manage Time
13. Speed Read
14. Remember Names.  Uhmmmm, this I also suck at!
15. Relocate Living Spaces
16. Travel Light
17. Handle the Police – I suppose I can, I have only ever had one dealing with them and that ended pretty well.  They let us off with a warning and then stayed for a cup of tea…..(it was in England, tea is always served)
18. Give Driving Directions
19. Perform Basic First Aid
20. Swim – I learned to do this when I was 9 months old when crawled out of my depth in a baby pool  I have been a water baby ever since.
21. Parallel Park
22. Recognize Personal Alcohol Limits – uhhhh, this I have a slight problem with.  I seem to be an all or nothing girl.  Luckily in the past couple of years it has been more nothing than all.
23. Select Good Produce

24. Handle a Hammer, Axe or Handsaw
25. Make a Simple Budget

26. Speak at Least Two Common Languages
27. Do Push-Ups and Sit-Ups Properly – in theory I know how they should be done.  In reality I just can’t do them!
28. Give a Compliment
29. Negotiate
30. Listen Carefully to Others
31. Recite Basic Geography
32. Paint a Room
33. Make a Short, Informative Public Speech – I HATE talking in public unless it is spontaneous.  If I actually have to prepare and think about it I get nervous.  34. 34. Smile for the Camera
35. Flirt without Looking Ridiculous – I am a bit out of practice and even when I did flirt regularly it was usually alcohol fuelled so I probably did look ridiculous….
36. Take Useful Notes
37. Be a Respectful House Guest
38. Make a Good First Impression
39. Navigate with a Map and Compass
40. Sew a Button onto Clothing
41. Hook up a Basic Home Theater System
42. Type

46. End a Date Politely Without Making Promises

47. Remove a Stain
48. Keep a Clean House

50. Jump Start a Car

40 out of 50……  I thought it might be a bit better than that as I like to think I am rather practical.

A LONG meme!

What’s the last thing you put in your mouth?
Water – I have a bottle on my desk and am trying to drink from it regularly.

Have you ever kissed anyone named Matthew?
Not that I can remember.  But that is not saying much.  Misspent and often best not remember youth…..

Who was the last person you rode in a car with under the age of 20?
I can’t remember.  It would have been a few years ago.  I used to give a little boy a lift every now and then when his mom could not pick him up.

Can you play guitar hero?
What is that?

Last time you walked further than a block?
Most days I walk further than a block.

How late did you stay up last night and why?
It was a “late” night for me.  I went to bed at about 10.  I was watching TV.

Not easily, but if I could find a way to earn an income and live somewhere in the country I would.

Do you believe ex’s can be friends?

Do you like calling or texting better?

What bed did you sleep in last night?
The one I sleep in most nights.

Mr OL bought me a chocolate on the weekend.  But it was coffee flavoured, which I don’t like so I gave it back to him in his lunch box yesterday.

Who took your profile picture?
A friend of mine Genny – It was New Years Eve 2 years ago.

Who was the last person you took a picture of?
One of the girls I work with.  I made her stand next to something I wanted to take a picture of so I could get a better perspective of the height of it.

Was yesterday better than today?
They were pretty much the same.

Can you live a day without TV?
Absolutely!!! When are they coming to take it away.

When was the last time you were extremely disappointed?
I am not sure about extremely disappointed.  I can recall mildly disappointed and that was on Friday.

Are you a bad influence?
Not any more……

Night out or night in?
Night in – I had far to many nights out in my 20’s and early 30’s and now give anything for a quiet night in.  Which is just as well because Mr OL does not like going out much either.  Unless, the night out is to a good restaurant with friends – then out!

Are you more of an individual or an outgoing person?
I would say more individual.

What items could you not go without during the day?
My car, if I am in town.

Would you share a drink with a stranger?

Do you think it’s right for straight guys to get their tongue pierced?

What does the last message in your inbox say?
“Eve’s side of the story”  A joke from my Sister in Law.  I thought it very funny.

I am pretty content.  Some things could be better, but all in all I am very happy with the way things are going.

No, there are a few people that I dislike but I would not say that I hate anybody.

Do you talk dirty to people?

If we were to look in your inbox, what would we find?
Lots of mail that I intend on deleting or filing but have still to get to.

Did you have a valentine this year?
Well I suppose Mr OL would qualify as a Valentine if he believed in it.  I bought him a card, but it is a pretty much a one way street.

Last person you talked to on the phone?
One of the girls I work with. She did not want to walk all the way to my office (next to hers) so she called me.

Strong and happy.

At the moment the fact that I am usually thirsty and as soon as I drink anything I need to go and pee (the joys of pregnancy)!!

Are your eyes the same colour as your mom’s or dad’s?
Closer to my dads, but mine are greener than his.

Has anyone ever told you you have pretty eyes?

Do you think too much or too little?

Depends on the situation.

Do you smile a lot?

Why was the last missed call on your phone?
I don’t answer calls from “private number”.  They are always from people trying to sell me stuff.

Are you happy with your life?
Yes, I think it has turned out just the way it was intended to.  I was thinking about it the other day and I could not have written a better script if I had tried.  I have travelled around the world, climbed the highest mountain in Africa, done some extreme sports and now am happily married and expecting our first child, and all so far has gone exceedingly well with this pregnancy.  I could not be happier!!!

Can you handle the truth?
I don’t handle critism well, but would much rather have the truth than lies.  I might react strongly initially but I usually with think it over and then come up with a better solution.

Do you get 8 hours of sleep everyday?
Usually – at the moment it is more like 10.

What was the last book you read?
“Exercising through your pregnancy” by James Clapp.  I am re-reading “World without End” by Ken Follet.  I read it last month and loved it so am reading it again.  It is the sequel to Pillars of the Earth which I first read about 14 years ago and is my all time favourite book.

Look behind you, what do you see?
A promotional photo of my sister and I in our Ironman t-shirts with the children from the EP Child and Youth Care Centre.

Have you ever worked in a food place?
Yes!!!  Far too many and I still get nightmares.  I worked as a waitress full time for over 2 years.  And part time for another 2.  My very first job was a holiday job in Plettenberg Bay at a pizza place when I was 16 – I lasted 2 days before I walked out crying.  Not to be outdone I applied at another pizza place the next day and worked there for the rest of the holiday.  I worked there the following December as well.  When I was at Varsity I started working at a Spur in Port Elizabeth HORRIBLE!!!  I then changed Spur’s and worked at Silver Cloud Spur for nearly 2 years.  I had a great time and made some awesome friends!  I then moved to Cape Town and worked at a Spur there too HORRIBLE – so I changed Spur’s again and worked at the Santa Ana Spur in the Waterfront.  I loved working there and stayed for about a year.  I moved back to PE and back to the Silver Cloud Spur.  I stayed there for about 4 months before going to London and vowing NEVER EVER to waitress again.  That lasted about 2 weeks until I started running out of money.  I worked at a hotel in the restaurant for about 2 weeks until the girl I went to London with got us both a job at a pub.  That lasted less than a week.  I then said enough is enough and have not worked in food again.  That was in 1994!  Unless of course you count that I run a guest house for a couple of years and we did breakfasts…..

WOW – That was LONG!  Thanks Mel for posting it.  It is just what I felt like doing today.

Another meme

So once again I am “stealing” meme’s.  Thanks Shayne – just what I need at the moment.

Interview Me!

I saw this on Hayley’s blog – Everything Imbetween and thought it could be fun, that and the fact that I am a bit stuck on stuff to write!  So until inspiration hits again here is my “Interview me”

Firstly here are the rules:

You need to let me know if you’d like to play along and I’ll send you some questions!

1. Leave me a comment saying interview me, fill in your email address in the relevant box.  It won’t be visable to anyone but me.  Or if you prefer you can just email me directly at

2. I will email you five questions.

3. Answer the questions on your blog.

4. Post rules on your blog with an offer to interview anyone else who emails you wanting to be interviewed.

5. Try and personalise the questions to the particular blogger.

Then without further ado, here are the questions that Hayley set for me.

1) How did you get into blogging and why?

About 2 years ago I was in a very boring job, which luckily had internet access.  I spent a lot of time online started reading other people’s blogs.  After a few weeks I thought I should start my own.  My first one was but last year I swopped over to this site as it is more reliable.

2) What got you started on the Ironman, running, cycling thing?

I was pretty sporty at school; although I was (and still am) pretty useless at anything that involved hitting, catching or throwing – that left running and swimming both of which I enjoyed.  After school I stopped all sport and went travelling.  I would occasionally get inspired to go for a run, but nothing serious.  Then about 5 years ago, after a boyfriend and I broke up, I decided to go for a run again.  I lived on the beachfront and could not have asked for a better place to run.  A few weeks later, my mom, who is a pretty competitive runner, asked me if I wanted to join her for a 10 km race.  I enjoyed it and I started running off and on.  For some reason that 10 km race is still the fastest 10 I have done?????  Then Port Elizabeth started hosting Ironman.  I went and watched for the first few years and each time I said I would love to do that.  It looked like so much fun.  After the 2005 one I decided enough saying I was going to do it, I MUST just do it.  So I  started doing smaller triathlons, firstly on a borrowed mountain bike, and then when I decided (for sure) I would actually do this I bought a entry level road bike.  At first I hated cycling, but loved the swimming and running.  I was so scared of the traffic that I was a wreck after each ride.  I said that the actual race was my most enjoyable ride.  No bunches of cyclists, no traffic, no fear (just a sore butt).  I was really worried about riding again and did not get on the bike for just over a year.  And then the oddest thing happened – I got on my bike and LOVED IT!  Now it is the discipline that I enjoy the most!  I am not sure what happened in that time but my paralysing fear is gone.  Don’t get me wrong, I am still nervous and get a bit stressed but not so stressed that I don’t enjoy myself.  I know that this time will be different, after this IM I will continue cycling, just because I enjoy it and not because I have to because it is part of triathlon.

3) Would you ever leave South Africa?

Hard Question!  We do talk about leaving of and on depending on what is in the news at that time, or how much Carte Blanche we watched.  We often talk about other countries that we would like to live in but every time we come up with a reason as to why South Africa is better.  Australia – the quarantine for our animals is too long.  UK – weather too miserable, houses too small.  USA – no desire to go there (although the more blogs I read the more appealing it appears).  We do look at some places and say – “ we would love to live there” but there is always a negative, like no employment opportunities, we don’t speak the language or something like that.  I have lived in Scotland, New Zealand, Australia and Sweden each for about a year and in England for over 2 years and still feel that SA is best for us for now.  But I suppose a lot depends on the situation in this country.

4) Any job in the world, what would you do?

See previous post – Caretaker or the Great Barrier Reef!

Ok, a bit more seriously!  I actually don’t know.  I have very, very varied interests so think I would love something and then 2 weeks later change my mind.  When I was younger I wanted to be a truck driver.  At the moment I would love to grow veggies and herbs, organise a farmers market for like minded individuals and have a café /deli that sells fresh, delicious seasonal foods.

5) What are your plans for the future, do you have anything you and your hubby are working towards?

Well, we said we wanted to be married a year before we started trying for a family……..We celebrated our anniversary in August.

We are also discussing the feasibility of moving to a smallholding.  Somewhere big enough that I could try and start the veggie and herb thing but small enough that it is still manageable.  Let’s see what happens!
